Self-Talk

What you say to yourself determines what you experience. We talk to ourselves all the time. The talk can be positive or negative, the talk becomes orders to our subconscious mind which then carries them out. So, it seems obvious that we should be putting out messages that are life affirming and positive. You can’t feel good about yourself if the messages you are putting out are negative and limiting. A good rule to live by is if you wouldn’t say something to someone else don’t say it to yourself.

A Course in Miracles says that healing is not just a result of behavior. It is a result of what we are thinking. We make of our life what we want. Ernest Holmes advises us to, “Learn to live by inspiration, to become artists in living, to sense the divine touch in everything.” 

Our thinking style can become a habit. Years ago I was teaching a class in self- esteem when I dropped my pen. As I bent down to pick it up I whispered, “What a klutz.” One of the students overheard me and said, “Did you hear what you said?” The truth is I hadn’t. It was embarrassing but it taught me a lesson. We can change habits but not overnight. It takes time. But the effort is well worth it.
