We all have challenges and unexpected events pop into our lives, for students of spirituality the issue is, how can I use my teachings to move beyond where I find myself in this moment? The simplest answer is to move into the flow of the divine presence. How you might ask? God’s love and grace is always flowing, we need not ask for a special act of love or mercy we need just place ourselves in that flow by going into the silence and listening for divine wisdom.
I thought it might be helpful to discuss some things we might do when life does throw us a curve ball.
1- Develop a practice today that will prepare you for tomorrow’s challenges. Taking classes and workshops, attending a spiritual center, meditating and journaling are all practices that prepare us for difficult times. It’s too late to begin when the crises hits.
2- Take a deep breath. Keep things in perspective, ask yourself will this matter in ten years? Remember there is always more than one way to look at any situation. 3- Stay in the present moment. Don’t awfulize by projecting what the future may bring, ask yourself, “What can I do right now to make this situation better?” 4- Remember you are at choice every moment, you can choose how to react to any situation. 5- Remember anything we experience is an opportunity for growth, we can learn from anything. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “A weed is a plant whose virtues have yet to be discovered.” 6- If you need help ask for it. Don’t let pride or your ego keep you in pain. There are people who care and would be glad to lend you a hand. 7-And lastly, Express gratitude, no matter what is happening there is still so much to be grateful for and gratitude is a way of life.
We all have a reservoir of strength we can tap into; difficult times prove that we are so much more than we know. When we encounter the unexpected and unwanted events that life can bring it may help to remember these words from a journal entry Tama Kieves wrote, “Ok Spirit I am willing to take your hand. I don’t know when the timing should be. I don’t know what this should look like. I know you love me and want me to blossom inside my soul. I know that you’ve reminded me that I don’t need to push the waves or blow the wind. I need to relax. When I am struggling I am trying to force something too small. So help me get out of the way.”
