Ernest Holmes once remarked, “Freedom implies the possibility of suffering.” Why? Because if we are free we are free to choose more than one course of action to experience and that implies we can choose some paths that are poor or hurtful choices. However, whatever we are experiencing in life be it wonderful or hurtful we can move beyond that experience and learn from it and grow spiritually, If we can trust that a higher power is always with us and available to us. Eckert Tolle reminds us “Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at this moment.”
Recently, I read a story about a man who was sentenced to prison for five years. Entering prison he was hostile to everyone. One day a trustee pulled him aside and told him there were “unexpected possibilities” where he was if he decided to use his time wisely. The trustee told him he was only hurting himself by the way he was behaving. Soon after the man changed his behavior, took classes and was released early for good behavior. A change in attitude brought him a whole new lease on life.
Joel Goldsmith, a New Thought pioneer, wrote that the secret to harmonious living is developing a spiritual consciousness. When we do we release fear and anxiety. We do this by placing our consciousness on something greater than ourselves, in other words getting out of our ego. He wrote, “Our consciousness is the substance of our world.” Remember the primary cause of our unhappiness is not the situation but our thoughts about it. Situations are always neutral, our thoughts give them meaning. When we change those thoughts, we change our life. It may not be easy but it can be done and it is worth the effort.
